Mid-Stream Operations

About Us

So many of our daily activities are made possible by a vast underground network of steel pipelines that quietly delivers the fuels we need to drive our cars and heat our homes, as well as raw materials for making items as diverse as medicines and food containers.

The Navajo Nation Oil and Gas Company (NNOGC) headquartered in St Michaels, Arizona owns and operates Running Horse Pipeline (RHPL) headquartered in Montezuma Creek, Utah.  Running Horse Pipeline operates crude oil  pipelines in Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico.  Running Horse Pipeline is part of the behind-the-scenes, yet vital, action that keeps this network humming around the clock and keeps consumers supplied with the modern conveniences that make their lives easier.

Pursuing Excellence in the Community

In some areas, all neighbors see of a RHPL-owned or -operated pipeline is a cleared area and markers along the pipeline's path. Where there are facilities like pump stations and terminals, Running Horse Pipeline may be a more visible part of the community. But in each community we touch, and with each of the pipeline systems we operate, we strive for excellence - in regulatory compliance, environmental stewardship and safety. Our operating practices and safety and environmental achievements earn praise and commendations from industry and governmental organizations.

A key component of this safety commitment is our ongoing Public Awareness program, which delivers pipeline education and public safety communications to our pipeline neighbors. For more details on pipeline safety and our Public Awareness program, see the “Our Neighbors” section.

Our Operations

Marketing

To better take advantage of the global commodity prices, the Navajo Nation elected to take their Royalty Oil in Kind (RIK).  NNOGC has been marketing the Nation’s royalty oil since the inception of the program in 1996.

Running Horse Pipeline

The pipeline system consists of an 87 mile, 16 inch interstate crude oil pipeline purchased from GIANT Industries in 2002, approximately 40 miles of crude oil gathering lines within the Greater Aneth Field and a tank farm with 240,000 barrels of oil storage capacity.  The Main line transports nearly all the crude oil from southeast Utah to market.  Daily deliveries average 15,000 barrels of oil per day.

Integrity Management Program

The first priority of our business is safety – the safety of our neighbors, employees, and the environment. Our programs are designed to help us operate safely.

Our Pipeline Integrity Management Program helps ensure the mechanical integrity of our pipelines.

Our Programs
Our employee training and qualification programs help ensure our employees have the knowledge they need to do their jobs safely and in a way that maintains the integrity of our systems.

Our emergency response plans describe our planned responses in the event of a pipeline emergency and provide RHPL emergency contact information. We share these plans with government response agencies near our pipelines.

Our Public Awareness program includes delivering pipeline education and public safety information to our neighbors. Brochures mailed annually describe how to prevent pipeline damage and how to recognize, report, and respond to accidents if they occur.

Our compliance assurance programs help us ensure that we are in full compliance with all applicable regulations as well as our own internal guidelines and procedures

Our Emergency Response

Key Components of the Running Horse Pipeline’s Safety Program The Running Horse Pipeline invests substantial human and financial resources in efforts to ensure the integrity of its system. We feel the best emergency response system begins with prevention and continuous monitoring. However, in the event of an emergency, we implement well-defined and extensively tested response plans. Here’s an outline of Running Horse Pipeline’s emergency response preparedness program:

What does the Running Horse Pipeline do in an emergency?
We first determine necessary steps to protect life and property, and we call 911. Our immediate next step would be to isolate the affected section of pipe, shut off the flow of crude oil, and contain remaining liquid. Concurrently, we assemble a team of experts from various areas of our company to address the emergency. Our main concern is the safety of the community and the response team. Once all safety issues are addressed, we begin assessing any property damage resulting from the incident. Further, we preserve the integrity of the site and work closely with local, state, and federal agencies to determine the cause of the incident and appropriate remedial measures.

What do the Running Horse Pipeline’s emergency response plans cover?
The plans outline the steps to be taken in the event of a fire, rupture, major leak, or serious incident occurring at or near one of our facilities. The plans are developed to prepare our employees and local emergency response personnel to handle emergency situations involving our facilities and to protect the public. The plans outline the roles and responsibilities of company, contractor, and local response personnel. Communication and cooperation with local organizations are key components of the emergency response plans, and the feedback from these interactions is used in the development and revision of these plans.

How does the Running Horse Pipeline’s safety record compare to others in the pipeline business?
The Running Horse Pipeline is a leader in safety and compliance. The company’s efforts include continuous computer monitoring, ongoing visual surveillance, corrosion protection, and public awareness education. The company dedicates thousands of hours a month to maintaining safe and reliable pipelines.
